have you ever laid in bed awake forever [seeming] trying to decide if you should sleep wearing pants or not?
i have. often. i think: wear pant because what if there is a big earthquake in the night and there is no time to think about putting pants on and you find yourself outside huddled with your family in the cold and wet looking back at your fallen house without pants and no way to go back in and get some to put on. but then i think, should i? because, it's pants one night and a bag packed the next and at some point you can't even sleep you are just so afraid, you can never be prepared enough. so you think you have decided not to wear pants because you don't want to live in fear but then you start thinking again you don't want to be caught without pants on. what to do?what to do? so you lay there thinking. casting the pro's and con's back and forth. pants or no pants. and you wonder why nobody has ever given you a final answer on what actually to do in an earthquake....go under a table? go outside? stand in a doorway? and then i get mad at myself for wasting so much time thinking about if i should wear pants or not....i should be sleeping so i am not grumpy in the morning and if there is an earthquake, i need my rest! but that's not enough, i need to trust something bigger than myself. i need to know something greater is caring for me even if i end up walking through a natural disaster, lose everything, even my family. so, though my mind isn't at ease, i force myself to trust. i force myself to have faith and believe in something i can't see. i force myself to have hope in something bigger than myself, something that i don't always understand. then finally, i go to bed without pants.
have you tried tylenol pm? just kidding. i'm all for sleeping without pants (and swimming without suits). and i say go with your instinct in case of an earthquake.
ReplyDeletei can't sleep with pants on because i absolutely hate waking up with them rolled all the way up to my thighs and all twisted and constricting. i would rather run outside during an earthquake with no pants on than wake up like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I'm not the only one who has this dilemma. Here's the compromise I've come to. Wear no pants when hubby is home because there will be two of us (presumably) thinking. When hubby is out of town, I wear pants because I don't want to have to think of putting on pants on top of everything else I would be doing. However, my worry isn't generally earthquake, but fire.
ReplyDeleteI suppose that this could be prevented by wearing nightgowns, but I don't own any, so the pants compromise works for now.
unfortunately i think stuff like this *all the time*. ;^)
ReplyDeleteI am totally and completely a no pants sort of person. Bunchey, scrunchey, and alltogether uncomfortable. [And no swim suits, love your way of thinking Molly.]
ReplyDeleteNow that I'm out of the land of earthquakes I find myself kept awake by thoughts of what to do if one of the many volcanoes around me decides to suddenly errupt.
I'd like to advocate being prepared, but it does seem to take the trust out of the equation and the comfort out of sleep.
winter, pants.
ReplyDeletesummer, no pants.
but never - n e v e r - socks.
funny post.
i've yet to experience a remarkable earthquake in so. california. though i'm curious, i'm grateful for the solid ground on which we have lived. the recent tragedy in china really made me stop and think.
I think the same way...but it's a bra instead of pants. ha! ha! :) Earthquakes are my greatest fear second to tornadoes. :(
