these legs were made for walkin'

i was on a hike the other day, but before i hit the trail i gave myself a good pep talk about wearing some shorts with confidence. i decided then and there a letter needed to be written, letters last longer than thoughts so, i share... the letter:

dear sarah,

you know how you always say (think) you don't like your legs? you need to stop! i have a message for you: your legs are incredible! amazing & lovely. you can jump, skip, hike, walk, lunge, stroll, slide, kick, pedal, swim, stretch, dance, tiptoe, and scooter. not to mention how cute they are. they have a nice shape, different from others. unique! they are strong and most importantly they take you places! they take you to the market, to the bathroom, to the tops of mountains, and out to the buoy in the middle of elk lake. they take you anywhere your mind requests and that makes them marvelous. your legs look just like your moms. they are amazing and lovely and cute and unique (well unique other than matching your mom... like when you both wore those sort of cute/sort of weird matching intarsia sweater vests with the sheep or when you both wore the matching sweatshirts during the holiday season back in 1983 that read "merry me!" across the chest & all the boys (and some girls) made fun of you like you wanted to marry someone but your mom got away with it because she was already married. matchy matchy!) i just want you to know that you should forever love your legs. see them for the wonder they are. appreciate them. cherish them. never take them for granted or speak negatively of them. remember all they do for you and be thankful.

with all my heart as a true & honest friend,

sarah

(this reminds me a bit of when i have the opportunity to grocery shop by myself and i say "excuse us....oh, i mean, excuse me! ha ha....me myself and i, no usually my children are with me..." with some nervous laughter at my awkward remark about my having multiple personalities when i really don't i just usually have three girls along for the ride. i'm just writing to me, myself and i and inviting you to observe their interaction. too weird? welcome to my brain.)

  1. I love you. And your brain. And your legs. Even your knees (I remember you didn't like them growing up). :) (Don't ask me why I remember you and Osgood-Schlatter disease...)
