i used to be flexible. i mean, up until fourth grade anyway. it was all downhill from there in the flexibility department. i don't mean being flexible in circumstance. i mean muscles. this is deep isn't it. i used to love doing the splits. once during inside recess my girlfriends and i were doing cheers. it went like this...'strawberry short cake, banana berry split. we think your team plays like...shift to the left, shift to the right. stand up. sit down. fight! fight! fight!' we made up actions to go with the cheer. when we said split, we would all drop down into the splits. get it. well, once, i dropped down into the splits and tore quite a few ligaments in my leg. yup. it hurt. i was scared to do the splits again. i didn't need to be scared, i just needed to stretch my muscles again. at the beginning of the year i knew i needed to start stretching more, my young body was just aching way too much in the morning, so i've been stretching here and there. last week i decided i wanted to stretch at least 10 minutes a day. i was stretching and the girls decided to stretch with me. they laughed at how silly i looked trying to bring my head to the floor. funny, because there was NO WAY it was even close to the floor and i was moaning and groaning. they started saying things like, "mom! you'll never be able to touch your head to the floor!" and " if you ever did, you'd probably be, like, 97 years old or something!" i disagreed, told them of my younger flexible days and declared i would be able to touch my head to the floor by the time i turn 33, not 97. the challenge was on. i think they have already forgotten about it. i have been doing my stretching and they haven't noticed or made any snide remarks. yesterday, i was able to kiss my knee. why did i kiss my knee? i don't know, but i could, so i did. the challenge is to touch my head to the floor when i am sitting with butterfly knees....feet: sole to sole. knees: out like butterfly wings (do you know what i am saying?). interesting huh. i'll let you know how it goes.

wow head down while in butterfly!?!
ReplyDeletei can't even do that. is it humanly possible? (i am self-proclaimed pretty flexi....this yoga stuff helps too)
you go touch your head to the floor.
my flexi goal: splits.
i can't touch my head to the floor like that because i'm so short-waisted my head can't get over the top of my feet, does that make sense? sometimes i stretch real big and it feels so good and i think, man, how long has it been since i've done that? and if i have to ask. . . it's probably been too long.
ReplyDeleteyou both got me to question my goal. so i sat the girls down, asked them to stretch *the stretch* for me so i could see where their heads are.....sure enough. on the floor, over their feet.(insert singing 'you're the meaning in my life...you're the inspiration...' at the top of my lungs. so i sat down and we estimated, once my head is down a bit further, it will also be on the floor. i did my 10 minute stretching at this time, with the girls there watching. they again laughed, but THEN i touched my head to my knees and gave them a look. they joked. i said, "did you NOT see what i just did!?" they joked. i said, "what!?!" ocean replied, "no mom, really, you did good." then i said, "i would like to teach you a new song, it's really cool...." then i had them sing to me every time i stretched far 'you're the meaning in my life...you're the inspiration...' i seriously impressed them. yeah.
ReplyDeleteYou go girl. You know what's funny. I am so incredibly inflexible I cannot even sit in a long sit (legs straight in front of me on the floor). However, I can fold my legs in a pretzel and touch my head to the floor. So my point is, you are inspiring me to work on my ability to touch my feet when sitting in long sit AND you will meet your goal especially with that song in your head. Thankyou Chicago!
ReplyDeleteahhh, stretching. goes great with breathing. oh yeah, and chicago! :)
ReplyDeleteyes. thank you chicago. funny thing to add. the girl called my husband in to see how 'great' i was doing (yes, insert pure sarcasm). he came in, acted all impressed, but later said, "what's so special about getting your head to your knee? and what's so hard about touching your head to the floor? i'm sure i can do it, i mean, it's great that you were able to do that and all, but...?" i insantly sat up and said, "show me!" he totally couldn't do either.....i told him i thought he owed me a song. he sang. ha!
