feeling octoberish.

yesterday i was feeling very much in the autumn spirit, maybe not even so much autumn, but halloween spirit. halloween was always very inconsistent....sometimes we dressed up, sometimes we didn't, sometimes we stayed for the classroom party at school, sometimes we went home early, sometimes we answered the door, other times we turned out all the lights, sometimes we went around the neighborhood, and, you guessed it, sometimes hunkered down at home by a fire watching the snow fall warm and dry.

i feel like once october hits it is all halloween from there. now granted in our family we have some birthday's to celebrate along the way, but every store window screams halloween halloween halloween. being that halloween was always so inconsistent in my life, it has been that way in my children's lives as well thus far. costumes from our own dress up stash, costumes from target, no costumes at all, you see the pattern. last year however, we had so much fun, i knew i needed to develop a new end of october ritual for our family.

we were out in colorado visiting my mom, oldest brother and his family and decided to go bowling as a family rather than venture to homes of neighbors we didn't know. we bought jelly beans, fake nasty teeth, glow in the dark insects along with other little candies and surprises. every pin ya knocked down you could choose a treat (edible or not) from the bowl. it was great!!! it was so great, i planned since then that THIS year i would make the girls costumes, we would be back in colorado and bowling would happen once again.
our ticket are bought and we are gearing up to go. i made their costumes yesterday and it was so much fun. they each love their costume decision and are thrilled to sport something their momma made. i am sure that inconsistencies will stay intact....will i always make their costumes? probably not. will we always be in colorado over the eve of october 31st? perhaps no. bowling? i wish, but.....by golly i am going to try.

now let me share what, almost exactly one year ago, my daughters chose to be this year.

ocean = kiki ( from kiki's delivery service)
elli = jiji (kiki's black cat)
phoenix = tinkerbell (she wavered between a dog, a monkey and tink. the deciding factor on tinkerbell was that i will be pan)
